Cookies, pastels, spring flowers, and God’s love
7 Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Genesis 2:7 (NASB)
For the New Year I would like to go to the beginning, the lesson of Genesis, and children. My older brother, his age prompting a visit, put me in a place to fly out and visit. I had not seen my family in California in many years. Amongst those would be my niece and nephews and now their families.
Flying out my nephew Robert and Jenn invited me to stay at their home. Rob and Jenn have 2 children, girls, Ella and Ava. Both girls are young and early school age. They instantly became “my sweet girls” as I found myself wrapped around their little finger.
I found myself doing special things for my grandnieces, as I would have for my own grandchildren. One of those things is something that I used to do with my own children. Cookie night with dad was always a winner with our children and so, it would be with “my sweet girls”.
On Cookie Night I would take turns with them allowing them to stay up late and have cookies and milk with me. This became a special time between us, a bonding time. We all looked forward to it, and truth be told sometimes I think I did more than the girls did. It was no different with my grand-nieces.
Cookie night with Uncle Will turned into something they looked forward to with me. Beginning with Ava, I arranged with Robert and Jenn to allow for them to take turns staying up late. I bought Chips Ahoy and milk. It was our time. A time to share, a time to learn. They learned from me my favorite things, and I learned from them aspects of our human and spiritual journes.
One night Ava asked me after the initial bite of that chocolate chip cookie, “What’s your favorite color?”
With the question a light bulb went on in my mind as there was a deeper meaning. It took no time to respond. The question was simple in its asking but it brought about a complex answer.
“My favorite colors”, I said, smiling as I began. “I love the coolness in the grays and whites of winter as I find warmth in my favorite holiday of Christmas. I love the freshness of the greens of spring as it is year after year a reminder of renewal. I love the pastels of blues and yellows of summer and its long days and hope. Fall brings with it the sharpness of reds and oranges in the fallen crimson leaves with promises of things to come.”
Her simple question got me thinking, and suddenly all sorts of “favorite things” began spilling forth. My favorite scent is lemon in soaps and the freshness of cucumber. I love the scent of powder on baby’s as they lie sleeping on my chest. I love the feel of their warm breath on the nape of my neck. I am one with God at these times. More times than not I will be lulled to sleep myself.
The sound of music especially movie soundtracks accompanies my writing. The emotion it elicits, breathes life to my words. The innocents of children’s laughter makes me smile. My sweet girls reminded me of how special God made us. In the newness of the year let us be reminded of his love for us. As sure as a breeze moves the leaves about in a dance I am reminded of Ella and Ava, and those favorite things as they all spill over into The New Year.
